Acupuncture as Alternative Medicine
The term acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving the stimulation of points on the body using a variety of techniques. The most common acupuncture technique involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by hand or via electrical stimulation. Acupuncture has been practiced in China and other Asian countries for centuries and remains one of the key components of traditional Chinese medicine.
At Amazing Grace Family Medicine, we believe in treating the whole person. Acupuncture can treat pain in all areas of the body, whether a patient suffers from headaches, neck pain or arthritis. People with any type of chronic pain should consider acupuncture at our clinic. Acupuncture has also been used to treat insomnia, improve cancer and chemotherapy recovery, prevent cognitive decline and assist with pregnancy, labor and postpartum health.
Acupuncture points or “acupoints” are specific locations on the body that acupuncture treatment focuses on. There are 14 major energy-channel meridians on the body, with hundreds of points along each meridian where acupuncture needles are inserted. These points tend to be located where nerves enter a muscle, the midpoint of a muscle or at a point where muscle joins with bone. Major meridians include the lung meridian, large intestine meridian, stomach meridian, spleen meridian, heart meridian, small intestine meridian, urinary bladder meridian, kidney meridian and liver meridian.
